Description

Lapuan Kankurit cooperates with the John Nurminen Foundation. The foundation’s goal is to save the Baltic Sea and its heritage for future generations. The foundation’s projects improve the condition of the Baltic Sea by reducing the load on the sea and environmental problems, such as eutrophication and loss of nature. The foundation’s mission is also to cherish, enliven and convey stories and cultural heritage related to the sea. The Foundation’s Clean Baltic Sea projects advance the protection of the joint, unique marine environment, so a cooperation is a natural part of the activities of a responsible, design weaving mill using natural materials.

Traceable natural materials

The warp yarn used in the making of this product is 100 % linen and the weft yarn is certified organic cotton. Because we want our products to have long lifecycles, we pay special attention to the quality and production of our flax fibre: the Masters of Linen–certified warp yarn we use is made of 100 % traceable European long staple flax. The yarns have been spun and dyed in the EU area according to the REACH regulations.

Own transparent production

Our own production in Lapua, Finland, enables us to utilise state-of-the-art technology and to combine the best materials together, of which this textile is a rugged example. We want to be responsible for the production of our products ourselves, starting from the yarn all the way to the finished product. This is why the most significant part of the production is done in our own weaving mill in Lapua, Finland.

The product design, material purchases, loom programming and warping as well as the pre-work stages, weaving and fabric inspection are done in our own weaving mill in Lapua, Finland. The sewing is done in our subsidiary’s own sewing department in Kaunas, Lithuania, or in our own sewing department in Lapua. The product finishing is done in our finishing plant in Lapua, Finland.

Care instructions

Wash the new textile before use. Wash separately at 60°C on a gentle cycle in plenty of water. 40°C is also an adequate wash temperature. Avoid softener and bleach. Do not tumble dry. Reshape and iron whilst damp. The colour of natural linen becomes lighter with washing. Shrinkage approx. 5%. Remember to take the textiles out of the sauna always after use, do not dry textiles inside sauna.

Reuse and recycle!

Reeta Ek

Meet the designer

REETA EK

Reeta Ek is a freelance designer from Helsinki and a MA graduate from Textile Art and Design department in the Aalto University on Arts, Design and Architecture. She has also studied Fine Arts, and already in her paintings she became interested in repeats, patterns and building a surface. She sketches by hand; plenty of drawings inspired by the subconscious – surfaces, rhythms, lines.

Lapuan Kankurit got acquainted with Reeta through Aalto University's Pattern Lab project in 2012, when Reeta's first patterns entered our collection. Since then, the cooperation has continued for more than 10 years.

Sustainable production

Developing the best textiles in the world is our passion. The world is changing, and Lapuan Kankurit has the courage to develop entirely new products and invest in our own production.

Our top designs are woven in Lapua, in the middle of the Ostrobothnian fields. Our own mill, the young, open-minded professionals, and the experienced older craftsmen who work there allow us to make our products a little better every day.

We use only natural raw materials. We know where our materials come from, and we also know all the working stages from thread to finished product. This produces a result we can be proud of.

Linen

Linen is one of our favourite materials. It is ecological, comfortable on the skin and easy to use. Linen absorbs moisture effectively and the textiles also dry fast!

The Masters of Linen flax we use, is grown by rainwater in France, Netherlands and Belgium, requiring no irrigation or much fertilizing.
