Description

Maëlis Ray’s first design for us, called KUOHU, takes inspiration from water’s flow, waves, and the texture of seafoam. This light and fast drying towel is practical, beautiful and ecological choice.

Traceable natural materials

Made of comfortable and breathable natural fibres: flax, Tencel and cotton. The warp is made of Tencel Lyocell and cotton fibre and the weft is made of linen yarn. Our linen, grown with the power of rainwater in Central Europe, is 100 % traceable and Masters of Linen–certified. Tencel is a European invention, a responsibly produced wood pulp fibre. Its production is FSC–certified which guarantees that the wood used as raw material in the production is responsibly sourced.

The yarns have been spun and dyed in the EU area according to the REACH regulations.

Own transparent production

Our own production in Lapua, Finland, enables us to develop new textile innovations and to combine the best materials together, of which this textile is a soft example. We want to be responsible for the production of our products ourselves, starting from the yarn all the way to the finished product. This is why the most significant part of the production is done in our own weaving mill in Lapua, Finland.

The product design, material purchases, loom programming and warping as well as the pre-work stages, weaving and fabric inspection are done in our own weaving mill in Lapua, Finland. The sewing is done in our subsidiary’s own sewing department in Kaunas, Lithuania, or in our own sewing department in Lapua. The product finishing is done in our finishing plant in Lapua, Finland.

Care instructions

Delicate laundry wash at 60°C in plenty of water. Wash separately. 40°C is also an adequate wash temperature. Do not use softner and bleach. Normal spin cycle. Reshape whilst damp. Linen fibres may come off the product during the wash. Check the lint filter before and after washing. The colour of natural linen becomes lighter with washing. We do not recommend tumble dryer.

Reuse and recycle!

Meet the designer

MAëLIS RAY

Maëlis Ray is a French textile designer who was born and raised in Lyon, the city known for its silk weaving tradition and the invention of the jacquard machine. Studying her bachelor’s at ESAAT and ENSAIT in Roubaix, another town with a history of textile industry, she pursued her master’s degree at the Swedish School of Textiles in Borås, Sweden, which she graduated from in 2023.

Lapuan Kankurit discovered Maëlis at the University of Borås’ Swedish School of Textiles and were immediately impressed with her talents and keen interest in woven textiles. As the judges of the final project jury, we wanted to reward her and offered her a cash prize or a trip to Lapua to visit our weaving mill. She chose the trip to Lapua. Spring 2024 she came all the way from Lyon to Lapua to visit our weaving mill. Her first design for Lapuan Kankurit, called KUOHU, takes inspiration from water’s flow, waves and the texture of seafoam.

Sustainable production

Developing the best textiles in the world is our passion. The world is changing, and Lapuan Kankurit has the courage to develop entirely new products and invest in our own production.

Our top designs are woven in Lapua, in the middle of the Ostrobothnian fields. Our own mill, the young, open-minded professionals, and the experienced older craftsmen who work there allow us to make our products a little better every day.

We use only natural raw materials. We know where our materials come from, and we also know all the working stages from thread to finished product. This produces a result we can be proud of.

Tencel

We have increasingly replaced cotton with the cellulose-based regenerated fibre Tencel due to environmental reasons, but also for its absorbency and softness.

Tencel® is a registered trademark for the lyocell fibre manufactured by the Austrian company Lenzing, with 100 % of Tencel originating from the EU area. Tencel is also spun into yarn in Europe.
