Description

Northern nature and our environment are precious for Lapuan Kankurit and therefore we are participating in fundraising for the Finnish association for nature conservation, Suomen luonnonsuojeluliitto, to protect The Saimaa Ringed Seal, an endangered seal living in Lake Saimaa, Finland. Saimaannorppa (Finnish for the Saimaa Ringed Seal), the Finnish version of leopard pattern, is designed by Kaarina Tiainen.

The SAIMAANNORPPA blanket features a woven “Save the Saimaa Ringed Seal” label, and we donate €5.00 from each blanket sold to help protect the Saimaa ringed seal.

The throw is raised to a soft finish, making it feel comfortable even against bare skin. This beautiful wool blanket can be used as a throw for naps, as a decorative accent on a sofa, or wrapped around you while relaxing by the fireplace.

Traceable natural materials

100 % wool – and pleasant warmth. The weft yarn is made in the EU area from high-quality, certified Wool Integrity NZ fibre, while the warp yarn is spun in the EU area from certified South American wool fibre. In order to achieve the best result, the fibres of our wool yarns come from different parts of the world, because the quality and fineness of the wool varies depending on the breeds of sheep and their living conditions. All yarns are mulesing-free wool.

Own transparent production

The most significant part of the production is done by the fourth generation of weavers in our own weaving mill in Lapua, Finland. We want to be responsible for the production of our products ourselves, starting from the yarn all the way to the finished product.

The product design, material purchases, loom programming and warping as well as the pre-work stages, weaving and fabric inspection are done in our own weaving mill in Lapua, Finland. The sewing is done in our subsidiary’s own sewing department in Kaunas, Lithuania, or in our own sewing department in Lapua. Finishing – including washing, milling, drying and raising – is done in our finishing plant in Lapua, Finland.

Did you know that we aim for complete transparency in our production? We are happy to give factory tours to interested groups.

Care instructions

Only wash if textile is very dirty, otherwise take textile outdoors in fresh air for a while. Hand wash at max. 30°C or dry clean. If using powder detergent, dissolve it in plenty of water. Immerse the blanket in the water and wash immediately. Squeeze gently. Do not scrub, stretch or wring out. Rinse thoroughly and squeeze out most of the water. Press the blanket between towels until half-dry and leave it to dry in an airy space. Do not tumble dry. Iron with a damp cloth, max. 150°C.

Meet the designer

Kaarina Tiainen

The lifetime goal of textile designer Kaarina Tiainen is to protect the endangered Saimaa ringed seal. Besides conservation work in the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation. The idea for her unique textile pattern of the Saimaa ringed seal originates from the popular wildlife animal patterns such as leopard and zebra. The Saimaa ringed seal craved for its own pattern.

The cooperation 2019 with Lapuan Kankurit led to the SAIMAANNORPPA products, which combine the craftsmanship of Lapuan Kankurit with a deep understanding of nature.

Our top designs are woven in Lapua, in the middle of the Ostrobothnian fields. Our own mill, the young, open-minded professionals, and the experienced older craftsmen who work there allow us to make our products a little better every day.

We use only natural raw materials. We know where our materials come from, and we also know all the working stages from thread to finished product. This produces a result we can be proud of.

Get to know material

Wool

Wool is a true natural material, one of its best qualities being heat insulation. Wool keeps you warm in the winter cold and feels nice and cool in the summer heat.

We have made massive investments to be able to make products from local Finnish wool, as well. Besides Finnish sheep wool, we also buy wool fibres and partly ready-made yarn from explicitly certified suppliers.
