Description

MERELLÄ design is a tribute to Liisa Hjelt, who was the first textile designer of the Lapuan Kankurit company. Nature is an endless source of inspiration in jacquard woven textiles. Liisa Hjelt designed the beloved jacquard wall hanging MERELLÄ in the late 70’s. These beautiful textiles created homeliness and brought a piece of nature on the walls of many Finnish homes. As Lapuan Kankurit was celebrating its 50th anniversary, our company’s chief designer Elina Helenius wanted to honor Liisa Hjelt´s extensive and diverse output by doing her own interpretation of the same motives that Liisa channeled in her time. MERELLÄ products are the 2020s version of Liisa’s themes in the 1970s.

Lapuan Kankurit cooperates with the John Nurminen Foundation. The foundation’s goal is to save the Baltic Sea and its heritage for future generations. The foundation’s projects improve the condition of the Baltic Sea by reducing the load on the sea and environmental problems, such as eutrophication and loss of nature. The foundation’s mission is also to cherish, enliven and convey stories and cultural heritage related to the sea. The Foundation’s Clean Baltic Sea projects advance the protection of the joint, unique marine environment, so a cooperation is a natural part of the activities of a responsible, design weaving mill using natural materials. Lapuan Kankurit donates a fixed sum to John Nurminen Foundation’s Clean Baltic Sea projects for each delivered product. We are donating for John Nurminen foundation 4,50€ for every sauna pillow sold.

Traceable natural materials

This comfortable pillow’s warp yarn is made of Masters of Linen–certified 100 % linen, while the weft yarn is certified organic cotton. The long staple linen we use is grown with rainwater in Central Europe, and is entirely traceable. The yarns have been spun and dyed in the EU area according to the REACH regulations. The filling is SL-1-graded fireproof polyester. SL references the Finnish flammability grading, with SL-1 being the most fireproof.

WE ADVISE CAUTION: Keep the pillow a safe distance away from the hot sauna stove. Do not fall asleep in the sauna. Remember to remove all textiles from the sauna after use, and do not leave them in the sauna to dry.

Own transparent production

We want to be responsible for the production of our products ourselves, starting from the yarn all the way to the finished product. This is why the most significant part of the production is done in our own weaving mill in Lapua, Finland.

The product design, material purchases, loom programming and warping as well as the pre-work stages, weaving and fabric inspection are done in our own weaving mill in Lapua, Finland. The sewing is done in our subsidiary’s own sewing department in Kaunas, Lithuania, or in our own sewing department in Lapua. The stuffing and final sewing of the pillow are done in Jalasjärvi, Finland. The product finishing is done in our finishing plant in Lapua, Finland.

Sustainable production

Developing the best textiles in the world is our passion. The world is changing, and Lapuan Kankurit has the courage to develop entirely new products and invest in our own production.

Our top designs are woven in Lapua, in the middle of the Ostrobothnian fields. Our own mill, the young, open-minded professionals, and the experienced older craftsmen who work there allow us to make our products a little better every day.

We use only natural raw materials. We know where our materials come from, and we also know all the working stages from thread to finished product. This produces a result we can be proud of.

Linen

Linen is one of our favourite materials. It is ecological, comfortable on the skin and easy to use. Linen absorbs moisture effectively and the textiles also dry fast!

The Masters of Linen flax we use, is grown by rainwater in France, Netherlands and Belgium, requiring no irrigation or much fertilizing.
