Description

The AURORA design was inspired by the majestic and soft scenery of the northern lights. The magical Aurora Borealis are an integral part of the northern landscapes of Finland and other northern countries—a world where the earth and space are interwoven.

“I wanted to express this imagery with a simple accumulation of lines. The overlapping drape-like expressions will give you a rich sense of three-dimensionality in the scenery of your daily life,” Akira Minagawa shares.”

The delightfully soft 100% wool ensures that AURORA hot water bottles are not only beautiful to look at, but also a pleasure to use.

Traceable natural materials

100 % wool cover with the weft yarn of our own. The yarn is spun from the wool fibres of Finnsheep and Finnsheep crossbreeds, which we have obtained from the local farms in Finland, as well as from certified Wool Integrity NZ fibre. The wool’s rich yellow colour comes from coffee – it is dyed with Paulig’s coffee production surplus in Lappajärvi, Finland. The warp yarn is made of certified South American wool fibre. All yarns are spun in the EU area and are mulesing-free wool.

Maintaining and developing the Finnish textile tradition has always been our passion, and we are particularly proud of this material.

The hot water bottle is made by the well-known German company Fashy GmbH from odourless, non-fading and recyclable thermoplastic. The hanging hook and stopper of the bottle are made of polypropylene. A hot water bottle can be sterilised by steaming. It complies with the British Standard BS1970:2012, is tested by TÜV Süd, is marked with the CE marking and falls under the Directive 93/42/ECC of 1993 on medical devices.

Own transparent production

Preserving and developing Finnish textile tradition is important to us, which is why we started collecting local wool from Finnish sheep farms for industrial use. A key motivation for the project was that a large portion of the wool had previously gone to waste. We also rebuilt the production chain that had disappeared from Finland. Now we control the entire wool production process and engage in unique product development while passing on our expertise to future generations.

The design of the bottle’s wool cover, material purchases, pre-work stages, weaving and fabric inspection as well as wadding and tuft finishing are done in our own weaving and finishing mills in Lapua, Finland. The sewing is done in our subsidiary’s own sewing department in Kaunas, Lithuania, or in our own sewing department in Lapua, Finland.

The hot water bottle inside is made in Germany by Fashy GmbH, which is the world’s leading manufacturer of high-quality hot water bottles.

Sustainable production

Developing the best textiles in the world is our passion. The world is changing, and Lapuan Kankurit has the courage to develop entirely new products and invest in our own production.

Our top designs are woven in Lapua, in the middle of the Ostrobothnian fields. Our own mill, the young, open-minded professionals, and the experienced older craftsmen who work there allow us to make our products a little better every day.

We use only natural raw materials. We know where our materials come from, and we also know all the working stages from thread to finished product. This produces a result we can be proud of.

Wool

Wool is a true natural material, one of its best qualities being heat insulation. Wool keeps you warm in the winter cold and feels nice and cool in the summer heat.

We have made massive investments to be able to make products from local Finnish wool, as well. Besides Finnish sheep wool, we also buy wool fibres and partly ready-made yarn from explicitly certified suppliers.
