Maija Fagerlund is both a textile designer and a lecturer in textile design at Aalto University. In both her design and teaching work, she has focused particularly on woven fabrics and pattern design. Lapuan Kankurit has collaborated with Maija for over 10 years; for example, students in her courses have had the opportunity to travel to Lapua to weave the patterns they’ve designed.
Jacquard fabrics hold a special place in Maija’s heart. They combine woven textiles and patterns, but she is also fascinated by the technique because of its creative potential.
“In a way, jacquard enables us to do almost anything; it offers a lot of possibilities, but it’s also governed by many principles of weaving, which in themselves can be quite inspiring.”
Maija describes herself as a structure- and fabric-oriented designer. Spending time in nature is a comprehensive source of inspiration for her.
“I want to recreate the moods I experience when walking in the forest or by the sea. There’s also a tremendous amount of inspiration to be found in textiles themselves—when I’m visiting flea markets and museums, I often find sources of inspiration in the various weaves and patterns of the textiles present there.”
