Heta Vajavaara

“Inspiration comes for me both from nature and the materials themselves I’m working with: nature is full of intriguing shapes and sights, but then a particular weave or yarn type makes me wonder what I could achieve with it.”

Heta Vajavaara is a Finnish visual artist and designer. She received her master’s degree at Aalto University’s Fashion, Clothing and Textile Design department, and has worked in weaving mills in Japan and Italy.

Heta describes her approach to weaving as both mathematical and material oriented. She’s interested in the technical side of things, how to create unique weaves and colour combinations with the restrictions of the material and the technology.

“I tried to do sketches before, but those become their own work and don’t make things much easier for me. I’m very hands-on—I need to get a concrete feel, to twirl the yarn in my hands.”

Heta’s style is, in her own words, ambiance-oriented. She often approaches her work with a clear idea of when the feeling it evokes is just right. This interplay of technicality and emotion makes her works unique and interesting.
